Tanzania's
university of Dar es |Salaam is the top ranked East African University
at position 12 in the continent according to the 2014 university web
rankings list released by 4icu.org that shows popularity of higher institutions online.
The university which is based at the port city of Dar es Salaam beat other regional heavy weights including Kenya's University of Nairobi at position 17 and Makerere university in Uganda while Rwanda's College of Arts and Social Sciences, university of Rwanda was at position 39.
Kenya however managed to sneak in the highest number of institutions on the top 100 list with five universities as compared to Tanzania's two, Uganda one and Rwanda's one.
4icu says it considers various variables while putting up the web ranking including: the Google Page Rank, Alexa Traffic Rank, Majestic Seo Referring Domains, Majestic Seo Citation Flow and the Majestic Seo Trust Flow. According to 4icu there were a number of universities without websites including two universities from Uganda namely Fairland University and the Uganda Pentecostal University, Rwanda's Kavumu College of Education, Rukara College of Education, while Katavi University of Agriculture in Tanzania also does not have web presence. Apart from web ranking 4icu also recognized universities official social media accounts.
4icu says the aim of its website is to provide an insight into the popularity of university websites especially to international students and academic staff to help them understand how popular a specific University/College is in a foreign country.
